ATTENTION:  You are required to notify the Stafford County Commissioner of Revenue office of any changes within 60 days; afterwards you must provide documentation.

County Code §23-2.1 & State Law §58.1-3518: 
States the return of all tangible property which acquires a situs within the county or which has its title transferred after the first day of January shall be filed within 60 days of the date on which situs is acquired or title transferred.  


State Law §58.1-3511: States the situs for purposes of assessment of motor vehicles, travel trailers, boats and airplanes as personal property shall be the county, district, town, or city where the vehicle is normally garaged, docked or parked.

*Cancel/deactivate the VA tags and apply a “Disposal Date”. You may be eligible for a refund on the unused portion of the registration; contact the VA DMV for more details. Moreover, please be aware if the DMV reports the vehicle(s) with active VA tags/registration next year, then they will be subject to personal property tax in Stafford. Furthermore, the DMVs throughout the United States DO NOT communicate with each other.

**If reporting after the required 60 days, documentation must be shown when it was no longer in your possession; bill of sales MUST be notarized at the time of the sale. Otherwise, no further adjustments can be made.

***If you moved to a non-prorating City/County after January 1, you will pay Stafford County taxes for the remainder of the current year or if you moved from a non-prorating City/County after January 1, you will pay Stafford County taxes the following year.
