Responsibilities When Conducting Business in Stafford County

REMINDER: Businesses that are located in Stafford County are required to register with our office since we do not have a business license nor BPOL.

1.) Register: When starting new and/or an existing business that relocated to Stafford, the owner is required to complete and return our business registration which is available online or printable(PDF).  Once completed, the Business Compliance Team will email a copy of the Business Registration Certificate.

2.) File: Every January, our office will mail the Annual Business Filings to the business.  On this form, businesses are required to list all assets used to conduct business, the acquisition date and the original cost.  Click here for more details.  If you need assistance completing this form, feel free to reach out to our office.  This form is due February 15th.

3.) Pay: From the Annual Business Filing, we will make an assessment which in turn will generate the annual tax bills.  The first half bill is mailed out in May, due June 5 and the second half bills are mailed in November, due December 5.

4.) Close: When a business closes, moves or is sold, the business owner is required to complete the Closed Business Affidavit*.

*REMINDER: Business Property taxes are not prorated; meaning if the business was open as of January 1st of the current year, then the business is taxable for that entire year.
