Plan Ahead to Complete DMV Business

As of Monday, August 17, 2020, Stafford’s DMV Select in the Treasurer’s Office will be open only by appointment due to the huge demand for its services. Appointments may be made and a list of the transactions you may complete at Stafford’s DMV Select may be found by visiting

“We are asking for the public’s patience during this time when we are all operating outside of our normal structures,” said Stafford County Treasurer Laura Rudy. “With the Garrisonville DMV being completely closed, our DMV Select has seen a volume of customers it is not designed for. I am very proud of my staff for the service they have provided to fill the void but we think it is best now to join other DMVs in requiring appointments for all transactions. It is also important that citizens know that many transactions may be conducted online via the Virginia DMV website.”

The Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) has extended the timeframe for renewing license plates and driver’s licenses due to COVID, so it is important to plan ahead to make sure you can complete your business by the extension deadlines. If your driver’s license expired before July 31, you are eligible for an extension with details being found at The extension is not to exceed October 31, 2020. If your registration expired between March and July, you are eligible for a 180-day extension not to exceed October 31, 2020. Information on other DMV service extensions is listed at the above website as well.

There are certain transactions you must visit a full-service DMV to complete.  These are:

  • To issue or renew a driver’s license, learner’s permit or identification card
  • To process any online or franchise dealership work
  • To process mechanics/storage lien titles
  • To issue Vital Records

If you have questions about DMV transactions, please dial DMV Customer Service at (804)497-7100 or visit  to locate a full-service DMV to schedule an appointment.

Stafford’s DMV Select is open by appointment from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.
