Stafford Board of Supervisors Kicks Off Year Full of Opportunities

The Stafford Board of Supervisors kicked off their first meeting on January 8, 2019, welcoming a year of opportunities for engagement with the public. The first order of business was to elect a new Chairman and Vice Chairman, something the Board does annually. Gary Snellings of the Hartwood District will serve as the Chairman. The Vice Chairman is Mark Dudenhefer, Garrisonville District. Chairman Snellings and Vice Chairman Dudenhefer have more than 17 years of experience between the two of them on the Stafford Board of Supervisors. Both men have served as Chairman before. Vice Chairman Dudenhefer also served two terms in the Virginia House of Delegates.

“Our community is at a critical juncture where we have to prioritize healthy growth and solutions to our transportation issues. This Board is dedicated to strategizing the best way to do that,” said Chairman Gary Snellings, Hartwood District. “Stafford County has everything from D.C. commuters to watermen to defense contractors to stay-at-home moms and dads. We want to know what they think, and I look forward to engaging with the public as we move forward together.”

The Board will take their first step toward addressing these issues by holding their annual planning meeting Friday, February 1, 2019, at noon at the Airlie Center, 6809 Airlie Road, Warrenton, VA 20187. The meeting continues on Saturday, February 2, 2019, from 8:30 a.m. to noon. The meeting is open to the public.

The Board has regular meetings on the first and third Tuesdays of each month at 3:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. in the Board Chambers of the George L. Gordon, Jr., Government Center, 1300 Courthouse Road, Stafford, VA 22554.

Members of the public may speak at Board meetings by filling out a speaker card, located on the table at the entrance to the Board Chambers and giving it to the Clerk of the Board of Supervisors. If you speak on a topic at the afternoon meeting, you may not speak on the same topic at the evening session. Also, if you intend to address a public hearing, please save your comments for the public hearing.

Additionally, there are standing Board committee meetings on those days in Conference Room ABC of the George L. Gordon, Jr., Government Center. The Community and Economic Development Committee meet at noon on the first Tuesday, and the Infrastructure Committee meets at 1:30 p.m. On the second Tuesday, the Public Safety Committee meets at noon, and the Finance, Audit and Budget Committee meets at 1:30 p.m.

Citizens typically do not speak during Committee meetings but seating is provided for the public to attend the open meetings. Additionally, all meetings of the Board of Supervisors or any Board-appointed boards, authorities, commissions or committees are open to the public except closed session meetings. Closed meetings involve sensitive issues legally authorized to discuss like personnel decisions or contract negotiations.
