[ARCHIVED] Join the Citizens Academy and Learn How Stafford Operates

Local government comes alive at the Stafford Citizens Academy. During the weekly classes running May 3 – May 24, Stafford County staff members describe in detail the inner workings of the public decision process and the role that citizens can serve within that practice. Registrations are open to the public and have already begun.

“Our Board is looking to engage citizens and make the business of government more transparent and accessible to everyone,” said Chairman of the Board of Supervisors Meg Bohmke. “The more citizens know, the more they will become part of the process. That is what the Citizens Academy is all about, and I am pleased we offer it.”

If you’ve ever wondered how the Board of Supervisors deliberates or what goes on when you turn in a permit, this class is for you. Topics include everything from the budget to Stafford’s rich history. The Citizens Academy also provides a tour of the Ford T. Humphrey Public Safety Building, located in the block next to the Government Center. Even if you’ve attended the Academy in the past, you can find out updates on the latest innovations in conducting County business such as the online permitting system.

“We’ve been offering these free programs for many years, and they are always popular,” said Jeff Shover, Citizens Assistance and Volunteer Services Manager. “They are interactive and are a rare opportunity to ask as many questions as you like about the way government works.”

Classes will be held weekly on Thursdays from May 3 through May 24, 2018. They will run from 6:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the George L. Gordon, Jr., Government Center, 1300 Courthouse Road, Stafford, VA 22554. To register for the Citizens Academy, please contact Jeff Shover at (540) 658-4516 or
