Update Personal Property Records

County Code §23-2.1 & State Law §58.1-3518: States the return of all tangible property which acquires a situs within the county or which has its title transferred after the first day of January shall be filed within 60 days of the date on which situs is acquired or title transferred.  

State Law §58.1-3511: States the situs for purposes of assessment of motor vehicles, travel trailers, boats and airplanes as personal property shall be the county, district, town, or city where the vehicle is normally garaged, docked or parked. 

See below of the required steps in order to update the personal property or business use vehicle records:

Address Update
STEP 1: Update DMV with your new address -

Purchased Vehicle(s) 
STEP 1: Register vehicle(s) with DMV and apply a Stafford Resident Location - 
online or call (804) 497-7100.
STEP 2: Register vehicle(s) with our office - 
online, or call at (540) 658-4132.

Sold, Traded, Junked, Donated, or Totaled Vehicle(s) 
 STEP 1: Report vehicle(s) sold with DMV - 
online or call (804) 497-7100.*
 STEP 2: Notify our office -

Moving INTO/WITHIN Stafford County 
 STEP 1: Update DMV with your new address and Stafford Resident Location - 
online or call (804) 497-7100.
 STEP 2: Notify our office with your address change -
online, or call at (540) 658-4132.**
STEP 3: Report to prior City/County Commissioner of Revenue office of your new address and the date you moved out of their City/County.***

Moving OUT of Stafford County/State 
 STEP 1: Update DMV with your new address and it's respective Resident Location -

STEP 2: Register vehicle(s) with the new city/county/state that you moved to.***
 STEP 3: Notify our office of your address change and the date you moved out of our county - 
online, or call at (540) 658-4132.**
 


*Cancel/deactivate the VA tags and apply a “Disposal Date”. You may be eligible for a refund on the unused portion of the registration; contact the VA DMV for more details. Moreover, please be aware if the DMV reports the vehicle(s) with active VA tags/registration next year, then they will be subject to personal property tax in Stafford. Furthermore, the DMVs throughout the United States DO NOT communicate with each other.

**If reporting after the required 60 days, documentation must be shown when it was no longer in your possession. Otherwise, no further adjustments can be made.

***If you moved to a non-prorating City/County after January 1, you will pay Stafford County taxes for the remainder of the current year or if you moved from a non-prorating City/County after January 1, you will pay Stafford County taxes the following year.
