US-1 at SR-610

Jefferson Davis Highway - US-1 at Garrisonville Road - State Route 610  - Right Turn Lane
- Intersection of SR-610 and US-1 has a failing Level of Service (LOS) during peak afternoon traffic periods.  Furthermore, US-1 serves as the primary alternate route for I-95 when backups occur on the interstate.  Proposed improvements to intersection include additional right turn lanes from southbound US-1 to allow increased traffic movement west on Garrisonville Road.  Preventing daily queing of traffic into the US-1 southbound travel lanes.
Lane Closures Allowed:
Monday - Friday 10:00 PM to 7:00 AM  &  Saturday - Sunday 10:00 PM to 9:00 AM

ROUTE 1 & GARRISONVILLE ROAD RIGHT TURN LANE PROJECT
INFORMATIONAL MEETING HELD JANUARY 11, 2016
ALEX OWSIAK, P.E. - TRANSPORTATION PROJECT MANAGER
PROJECT SELECTION
- The Route 1/610 intersection was identified in a September 2014 Route 1 Corridor Study as the County’s highest-volume intersection
- Delay for the southbound right-turn traffic during the PM peak hour approaches 3 minutes
- Current PM peak hour queuing exceeds ¼ mile in southbound direction
- Southbound Route 1 traffic turning onto Garrisonville Road is projected to increase an additional 50% in the next 20 years
PROJECT FACTS
- Widen and improve 0.22 miles of Jefferson Davis Highway (Route 1)
- Extends from the intersection with the I-95 Northbound On-Ramp to the intersection with Garrisonville Road (Route 610)
- Total Project Cost: $800,000
The project will . . .
- Provide an additional 14’ right turn lane with curb to direct drainage runoff
- Modify existing traffic signal for additional signal heads
- Improve traffic flow at the Route 1/610 intersection
- Relocate the Limited Access Fence for the I-95 exit ramp
- Our traffic analysis indicates the additional turn lane will reduce the approach delay to approximately 30 seconds as opposed to 3 minutes
NEXT STEPS
- Dominion Virginia Power will relocate a utility pole before construction of the new traffic signals can take place
- VDOT will replace the traffic signals at the intersection prior to construction of the right turn lane
- The project will be advertised for construction bids late-January, with bids due late-February
- Construction is tentatively scheduled to start in April 2016 and be completed in July 2016
