POPLAR ROAD - STATE ROUTE 616 - III Phases

PHASES I & II - COMPLETED MARCH 2016

PHASE III UPDATE:  
  • October 2016 - VDOT completing design.  Staff continuing finalizing ROW & easement acquisition.  Scheduling NOVEC & Verizon utility relocations.   
Poplar Road Phase III & Mountain View Road - Intersection
 From the intersection of Poplar Road and Mountain View Road 0.09 miles north and 0.27 miles south along
Poplar Road and 0.1 miles east along Mountain View Road (SR-627)
Project Length = 0.46 miles 
The improvements project reconstructs Poplar Road and Mountain View Road to meet VDOT GS-3 standards.  Improvements include horizontal and vertical realignment, typical section improvements (lane width, shoulder width, and roadside features), and sight distance improvements.
The roadway typical section includes two standard 12’ lanes with adjacent 8’ shoulders in each direction,
and roadside ditches to convey local drainage. Stormwater management in accordance with County and VDOT standards will be provided using traditional stormwater management basins along the length of the project.  A 2008 Transportation Bond Referendum Project.

Phase I
Warrenton Road (US-17) to 0.25 miles north of Truslow Road (SR-652) 
Improve roadway width, shoulder width, drainage and safety including two 12’ lanes (one in each direction),
graded shoulders, and turn lanes at the intersection with US-17.  Additional drainage improvements
including increased cross culvert capacity, ditches, stormwater management and improved cross slope
and elevation.

Poplar Road Phase II 
Improvements from 0.17 miles north of Truslow Road (SR-652) to the Intersection of Cedar Crest Lane
(a private lane)

Project Length = 0.6 miles
A 2008 Transportation Bond Referendum Project.  The project reconstructs Poplar Road to meet
current VDOT standards for a Rural Collector Road (VDOT Standard GS-3 classification). Improvements
include horizontal and vertical realignment, typical section improvements (lane width, shoulder width, and
roadside features), and sight distance improvements.
The roadway typical section includes two standard 12’ lanes with adjacent 8’ shoulders (3’ paved) in each
direction, and roadside ditches to convey local drainage. Stormwater management in accordance with
County and VDOT standards will be provided using LID (low-impact-development) and IMP (integrated-
management–practices) facilities.
