Landscape & Habitat Features
Stafford County is characterized by a rolling landscape cut by winding streams and creeks. Bordered to the east by the Potomac River and to the south by the Rappahannock River, surface water is a significant natural feature in the county. In addition, the county’s forestlands, including the Crows Nest Natural Area Preserve, provide habitat for many different wildlife species. This natural environment provides a desirable place to live, for wildlife and residents.

Easement Programs
The Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS) has easement programs that may be beneficial to property owners in Stafford County. These programs are intended to protect productive farmland; provide support for active grazing operations, including the protection of grasslands threatened by conversion to other uses; and provide support for wetland protection and restoration. These programs include the following:
  • Farm and Ranch Lands Protection Program
